Transaction Fees

Main Fee Components

When you submit a transaction on Santiment L2 Chain, you’re actually paying two types of fees:

  1. L2 Execution Fee

This covers the cost of executing your transaction on the L2 chain itself. It's calculated based on:

    • Gas used by your transaction (just like on Ethereum)
    • The current L2 gas price set by the network (typically much cheaper than L1)
  2. L1 Data Inclusion Fee

Every L2 transaction is eventually posted to Ethereum L1 as part of a batch (using blobs).

    • This fee covers the cost of storing your transaction data on Ethereum.
    • It depends on Ethereum’s L1 blob gas prices and the size of the transaction (in bytes).

So, even though your transaction happens on L2, some part of the fee goes to Ethereum because that’s where the L2 rollup stores its data for security and verification.

Where the Fees Go

  • L2 Gas Fees are paid to the Sequencer Node (the node that orders and executes transactions on L2).
  • L1 Fees are paid directly to Ethereum miners/validators when the rollup posts its data to L1.

Why It’s Cheaper Than L1

  • L2 gas fees are much lower because there is more space in blocks and execution is optimized.
  • Even with the added cost of L1 data inclusion, the overall fee is often 10–100x cheaper than on Ethereum mainnet.
